MEET THE ARTIST
Kara Young
Kara is an internationally recognized professional fiber/mixed media artist throughout the United States. in Europe, and in Japan. Here work is seen as ancient but also contemporary fitting in many environmental settings. Kara has worked as a fiber artist since the beginning of her art career starting with sculptural weavings and the designing art clothing and on to papermaking for the past 14 years. Fired copper is the signature of my work. The process literally rose out of the ashes of the Oakland fires of 1991. (2011 is the 20th anniversary) after my studio and home burned to the ground. While digging through the rubble, amid my tears and grief I discovered beautiful burned rolls of copper that inspired a dramatic redirection to my artistry/ artistic endeavors. I have no idea what my work would look like today if this fire had not have happened. This is the miracle of creativity.

In 1991 my house and studio burned to the ground in Oakland, California. It was considered the largest urban fire in history. When going back to the site to dig up copper I had in the studio, it inspired me to fire copper in a wood-burning stove to create brilliant colors. I had witnessed the remains, the jewels were the first pieces that I used this dynamic fired copper to create the 'Light from Within.'
