The Elk (Cervis canadensis) is also known as the wapiti, a Shawnee word meaning white deer. When they first saw elk, the early settlers thought the animals weremoose, so they called them elk which is a British word for moose. Elk usually live in forest and forest-edge habitats, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, bark, grains and even lichen. An adult bull can weigh over 1000 pounds but despite their large size, bulls can run 35 miles per hour. Both bulls and cows are good swimmers. Elk tracks are longer and more robust than those of deer. Elk also leave distinctive wallows where they dig into the ground with their hooves and antlers. Only the males have antlers, which start growing in the spring and are shed each winter. While actively growing, the antlers are covered with and protected by a soft layer of skin known as velvet which is shed in the summer when the antlers have fully developed. Cold cast and realistically hand-painted. Tabletop or wall presentation. Includes educational facts on each animal. 6-1/4"H x 6"W x 1"D.
